I read a genre fiction. Youthful habits leaned heavily on fantasy and science fiction. Guiding recommendations from an English teacher led me to the literary satirists Vonnegut and Orwell. Quickly followed were all the great dystopian novels: Brave New World, The Clockwork Orange (my favorite), and The Handmaid’s Tale. Here, Atwood’s protagonist is a forever reminder that I must help my daughter navigate through a patriarchal society.
