The Smurfs reached the US adolescent zeitgeist in the early 1980s. I was deeply impacted and adored their mythology. Smurfs are blue-skinned diminutive male creatures identified by one character trait, though two characters are anomalies. One is their own patriarch, Papa Smurf. The other is their singular female, Smurfette. Big Papa symbolizes how I’ll address biology and anatomy with my daughter while fostering her societal roles and internal sense of self.
