My father was born in Warsaw Poland at the outbreak of World War 2. He migrated through the UK and Canada before settling in NW Pennsylvania. He confronted ethnic slurs regularly after reaching North America, and that marginalization also impacted his two sons. Childhood classmates always called me a Polack and shared unsolicited Polack jokes. Being labeled an unsophisticated idiot had a profound effect on my youth. As an adult, I choose to use these offensive jokes as a means of solidarity within my culture. Still, I am uncertain how to broach this topic with my daughter.
